Skokomish, Sea Lion Rock

This was last exhibited during the Northwest Native Women's Leadership conference, at the Squaxin Tribe's Silver Creek conference center, 2012.

The textile and bowl are carefully matched, with the characteristic dog icon and the complex masterpiece icon of their basket making design: 'Sea Lion rock'.  Just off the coast of Washington, there are a number of rocks which have served as the low tide homes for sea lions. The circles of seaweed drying black in the sun, are accented with the triangles and full forms of sea lions, basking in the sun to warm for their next dive.

One summer, while camping on the coast, we were close enough to hear the distant, non stop roar of barking coming from the sea lions on just such a rock. What a landmark in the acoustic landscape!
